Rain Gutter Regatta

What Is the Rain Gutter Regatta?

The Rain Gutter Regatta is one of the most exciting and creative events in Cub Scouting. Instead of racing cars like in the Pinewood Derby, Scouts design, build, and race small sailboats. The boats race down long sections of rain gutter filled with water, powered only by the Scout blowing on the sail. The result is a fun, fast-paced competition that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and a little bit of lung power.

Building the Boat

Each Scout receives a small boat kit that includes a lightweight hull, mast, sail, and other basic parts. Using this kit as a starting point, Scouts assemble and decorate their boats. Many Scouts enjoy painting their boats, adding decals, or creating unique themes. Some may design pirate ships, racing yachts, or colorful creations that show off their imagination.

While the kits provide the basic structure, Scouts are encouraged to personalize their boats and take pride in their work. Building the boat also gives Scouts a chance to practice simple skills such as measuring, assembling parts, and following instructions.

How the Race Works

During the event, two boats race at a time in a long rain gutter filled with water. Each Scout stands at one end of the gutter and propels their boat forward by blowing on the sail. The goal is to move the boat from one end of the gutter to the other faster than the competitor.

Because the boats are powered by breath alone, the races can be exciting and unpredictable. Scouts quickly learn that steady, controlled blowing often works better than one big burst of air. It’s a fun challenge that combines strategy and endurance.

More Than Just Speed

Although racing is a big part of the Rain Gutter Regatta, many packs also recognize creativity and craftsmanship. Awards may be given for categories such as best design, most colorful boat, or most original theme. This ensures that every Scout has an opportunity to be recognized for their effort and imagination, not just their racing speed.

A Fun and Memorable Cub Scout Tradition

The Rain Gutter Regatta has been a favorite Cub Scout activity for decades. It brings together hands-on building, friendly competition, and lots of laughter. Whether a boat wins every race or simply makes it across the gutter, the experience of designing, building, and racing it is what makes the event memorable.

Most importantly, the Rain Gutter Regatta encourages Scouts to try their best, cheer for one another, and have fun as a pack.
