What Is the Pinewood Derby?
The Pinewood Derby is one of the most well-known and exciting traditions in Cub Scouting. In this event, Scouts design, build, and race small wooden cars down a specially designed track. The Pinewood Derby combines creativity, craftsmanship, and friendly competition, making it a highlight of the Cub Scout year for many families.
Building the Car
Each Scout begins with an official Pinewood Derby kit that includes a block of pine wood, four plastic wheels, and four metal axles. Using these basic materials, Scouts transform the wooden block into a racing car of their own design.
Some Scouts choose sleek, aerodynamic shapes built for speed, while others create imaginative designs such as race cars, trucks, animals, or even favorite characters. After shaping the wood, the car is sanded smooth and painted or decorated however the Scout chooses. Stickers, decals, and creative paint schemes help make every car unique.
Many Scouts build their cars with help from a parent, guardian, or other family member, making the Pinewood Derby a great opportunity to work together and learn new skills.
How the Race Works
During the event, cars race down a long, sloped track that typically has multiple lanes. The cars start at the top of the track and race to the bottom using only gravity for power. Because the cars are not powered by motors or batteries, careful building and preparation can make a big difference in performance.
Each race is quick and exciting, often lasting only a few seconds as the cars speed down the track. Multiple rounds of racing are usually held so that Scouts have several chances to compete.
More Than Just Speed
While many Scouts enjoy the thrill of racing, the Pinewood Derby also celebrates creativity and effort. In addition to speed trophies, many packs award prizes for categories such as most creative design, best paint job, funniest car, or best theme.
This ensures that every Scout can take pride in their work and be recognized for the time and imagination they put into their car.
A Cub Scout Tradition
For generations of Scouts, the Pinewood Derby has been a memorable part of Cub Scouting. The event brings together Scouts, families, and leaders for an afternoon or evening filled with cheering, creativity, and friendly rivalry.
Whether a car wins every race or simply rolls down the track for the first time, the Pinewood Derby is about doing your best, supporting fellow Scouts, and enjoying the fun of building something with your own hands.
